Aluminum Vehicle Accessory Tool Box

The United States military awarded U.S. Components & Packaging Specialties, Inc. a contract to fabricate an aluminum and steel reinforced detachable accessory tool box to house equipment and essential field implements in a mobile artillery vehicle application. We launched immediately into strategizing the building of the tool boxes as requested which involved the orchestration of ten subcontractors and special tool designs specifically required for the project.

By way of a customer-supplied print and our own 2D CAD drawing, we envisioned the fabrication process we would necessarily undertake: procurement from multiple sources, sheering, cutting, notching, punching, bending, drilling, deburring, riveting, TIG and MIG welding per MIL-STD-1261, and even the stitching of a high tensile strength textile webbing strap that would all be factored in the process of turning 35 lbs. of 5052 aluminum and 1008-1025 carbon steel into a .063"-thick military-grade accessory; the overall tightness tolerance being ±.03".

We sourced an assortment of different hardware fasteners required by the design and after cutting and forming the key structural elements, we assembled the parts by way of welding and riveting. Interim steps included the painstaking process of cleaning all surfaces and the fastidious application of chemical resistant agent coatings (CARC), which involved treating all surfaces of the container with wash/etch primer and an epoxy flat primer. A flat polyurethane finish coat was applied as the final step before individually crating each unit for delivery.

U.S. Components has responded on multiple occasions to supply discrete quantities of this hand crafted specialty item to as many as 500+ in one order. Our military now has new, durable and chemically-resistant robust containers in which to store vital implements for its mobile artillery units in the field.
